Cuban-born artist Esteban Blanco develops a body of work based on the esthetic values and social implications of toys. Fashioned in a variety of media, from wood and fiberglass, to bronze and paper, these works explore the parallels between the comforting make-believe world of child-play and the absurdities of the real world. “Toys are our gateway into adult life; it’s where we demystify the adult world we will soon enter. We play fireman, house, cops and robbers, rock star – then we become those things and society becomes our play circle. And to the extent that our childhood dreams are ever fulfilled, we continue to play – or we grow-up”.
